The office of 'Register' only appeared during the Commonwealth period. The holder was responsible for keeping the registers of the parish, replacing the previous arrangements of the Church of England which had been abolished.
The collections recorded here were usually made in response to catastrophes, and were ordered by central government through which the money was passed to the beneficiary, often with charges deducted along the way.
